Dam Safety Technician, start ASAP, long-term temp possible to permanent, Gwent Area, Mon to Fri, 37.5 hours.

Your new role
As a credible member of the Dam Safety Team you will:
Provide support and assistance to the Dam Safety Engineer in the surveillance, monitoring and maintenance of reservoirs under the Reservoirs Act 1975. These will be large impounding and service reservoirs.
Be responsible for the management of Company Dam Safety Inspectors.
Carry out maintenance and reactive works, meeting budgetary and performance targets, generally related to the safety of the Company's reservoir stock.
Be responsible for engaging and supervising brought-in services for the delivery of maintenance schemes.
Be responsible for managing one's own health and safety and meeting exacting health and safety standards.
Be fully IT literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office, and the ability to use bespoke software.
Be a team player, who understands the importance of ownership and accountability.
Hold a current full driving licence.
Be physically fit.

As a Dam Safety Technician you will:

Be responsible for taking measurements such as water levels, piezometers and drainage flows and undertaking visual surveillance of dam structures as specified by the Dam Safety Engineers..
Plan and supervise periodic checks on reservoir dam line and level.
Be responsible for operational activities on the reservoirs, e.g. operating valves, managing grounds maintenance contractors
Analyse and advise upon the results from monitoring of an assortment of instrumentation and observed behaviours.
Be responsible for immediately reporting any changes or abnormal behaviour of these reservoirs to a Dam Safety Engineer.
Manage, motivate and advise, as necessary, the Dam Safety Inspectors, and other personnel responsible for the day-to-day surveillance and monitoring of dams.
Maintain all records as required by the Dam Safety Engineers.
Advise and liaise with external and internal support (e.g. the Capital Team, Water Resources Team, NRW, ECARE, Health and Safety, Process Scientists and consultants) upon the cost effective engineering solutions of minor maintenance and reactive works.
Undertake assigned activities to ensure compliance with the Company's Dam Safety Procedures and the Reservoirs Act.
Carry out and support confined spaces entry into tunnels and shafts as directed by the Dam Safety Engineer.
Principal accountabilities
Plan and deliver regular line and level surveys of a number of the Company's dams, reporting on any anomalies found to the Dam Safety Engineers.
Regularly interpret and report upon the monitoring records resulting from day-to-day surveillance of the Company's dams.
Use IT for updating records, storing and retrieval of drawings, files and other data with regard to reservoir safety and maintenance.
Health and Safety management responsibility for all those involved in the delivery of reservoir safety and maintenance, including direct and sub contract workforces.
Engage, supervise and manage brought-in services for the maintenance of reservoirs, within budget.
Take part, as directed, in the event of an emergency occurring at any of the Company's dams and reservoirs.
Ensure that the operation of reservoirs is undertaken in line with quality management procedures and is compliant with all relevant statutory and legislative requirements.
Ensure that all dam safety activities are undertaken in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.
Ensure that, in accordance with the Reservoirs Act and the Company's Dam Safety Procedures, all reservoir records are maintained in accordance with instructions from the Dam Safety Engineers.
Liaise with internal and external providers, e.g. Capital Delivery,our Alliance partners and framework consultancies on all matters relating to the safety and maintenance of the Company's dams.
Maintain an effective and motivating relationship with Dam Safety Inspectors, ensuring good communication and teamwork.
Be an effective team player, supporting wider team colleagues and promoting best practice and standardisation to improve business performance.
Be responsible for one's own health and safety management.
Carry out other duties, as required, to meet business needs.

What you'll need to succeed
Educated to HNC level, in a numerate or engineering subject
Relevant experience in the water and / or civil engineering industry, ideally working in one or more of the following areas: Dams and reservoirs, water operations, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering , hydraulics, hydrology.
IT proficient
Holds a full current driving licence
Able to demonstrate effective management of site health and safety and Company and legislative procedures
Able to evidence effective line management of an operational team
Able to communicate, effectively, with internal and external bodies with regard to the safety and maintenance of reservoirs
